As Rachel rolled over, banging her head on the armrest in the back seat of her car, she realized she wasn’t at home. Her legs were cramped and achy from sleeping in a ball all night. The back seat of her car wasn’t comfortable, especially not when it was the only place she had to sleep. “How people live in their cars, I’ll never know,” she muttered to herself, pushing the back door open and getting out, rubbing her head and stretching.

After seeing the devastation done by Hugo and his men, Rachel knew it wasn’t safe to go back to her apartment, and there was no way she was going back to Jacob’s just to watch him get high. What she’d seen at the shipping company terrified her. It only added to the idea that Hugo would do whatever he needed to in order to get the flash drive back. Her hands shaking, Rachel had tried to calm down once she left work, to think of a plan. She needed a place to hide overnight so she could think. After driving around for a few hours the night before, she ended up going to Boston Logan Airport. There were long-term parking facilities just outside of the airport terminals, ones that work travelers tended to frequent. Not wanting to arouse any suspicion, Rachel grabbed a ticket from the automated kiosk at the entrance as if she was leaving for a trip, the arm blocking the driveway opening as soon as she pulled it out, choosing a spot as far back in the acres of cars as she could find, though not off by itself. She wedged her sedan between a couple other cars and a dumpster, ones that looked like they’d been in the lot for a while. Glancing around her, there wasn’t much to see – just her backpack on the seat and her cell phone, the screen dark, sitting in the cupholder.

After hiding out in her car overnight, there was nothing Rachel wanted to do more than go back to her apartment, get a shower and a clean change of clothes and spend time with Chloe, pretending everything was normal, but after what she’d seen on the flash drive, she couldn’t. The problem was work. When they figured out she didn’t show up, and someone decided to tell Mrs. Johnson, or worse yet, Mrs. Johnson called the company and talked to Gina, the only place Rachel would be going would be back to jail. Rachel pulled her phone out of the cupholder, noticing that after booting it up, she only had half a charge left. She stared at the sky for a second, waiting for her phone to connect to a signal, blinking when her phone beeped. It hadn’t been on in two days. There were a couple messages and a few texts. Most of them were from Jess. She pressed her lips together and shook her head. She should never have called home. Knowing Jess, she wouldn’t leave Rachel alone until she figured out what was going on.
